The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published an article where the researchers challenged the current concept of obesity. The article was co-authored by a team of 17 internationally recognised scientists. The researchers revealed a new perspective about weight gain. They mentioned that what we eat instead of how much we eat is the main cause of obesity.

Why gaining weight is harmful?

As far we know that the more calories we consume, the more we will gain weight. If we don’t burn the calories we consumed, it stored the extra calories in our body as fat. As a result, we are facing the problem of obesity. So, the general thought is to eat less and exercise more.

Obesity is one of the factors that promote many serious diseases like heart conditions, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. More than 40 percent of Americans are obese. So, it is very important to find the root cause of weight gain. Researchers are trying to help people to figure out effective ways to manage weight and obesity.

Rethink about traditional concept of obesity

A recent study suggested that overeating doesn’t cause weight gain. According to the article, overeating the wrong kinds of foods is the main culprit, rather than overeating itself. The study explained obesity as a metabolic disorder. An endocrinologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School, Dr. David Ludwig is a co-author of this article.

He thinks that we need to have a closer look at our daily diet chart to reduce the amount of processed food. He said, “Conceptualizing obesity as a disorder of energy balance restates a principle of physics without considering the biological mechanisms underlying weight gain.”

Eat smartly to avoid excessive weight

You can eat as much as you want. But you have to avoid all the processed carbohydrates such as pastries, pizza, packaged pasta. Because according to the new research findings, change in metabolic rate is playing the main role behind weight gain and obesity.
