The omicron variant of Coronavirus is spreading rapidly. In the U.S.A. thousands of people are infected every day. Virus experts are recommending booster shots as optimal protection against the Omicron variant. But now it is a matter of question how long it will protect you and how many additional doses we require overtime.

Recent findings

The study conducted in the U.K. analyzed the long-term protection of the booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine. Researchers observed more than 700,000 Omicron cases. They found that Pfizer’s booster can reduce the risk of symptomatic infection by 70 percent.

However, the researchers found that the length of protection is not satisfactory. After three months of a booster, the chances of symptomatic infection decrease only about 50 percent. The study also showed that the protection can drop 40 percent after the four months of the third shot of the vaccine.

Expert suggestions

A global health correspondent Michaeleen Doucleff said, “Overall, it will likely last less than six months for most people.”

An immunologist Jennifer Gommerman said, “It is perfectly normal and expected that any vaccine even the booster antibody levels rise quickly right after the shot and then diminish over time.”

She also said, “The vaccine’s efficacy against infection relies on our level of antibodies because they are really our first line of defense against SARS-CoV-2,” Then she explained. “So in terms of protection against infection, we will see some protection early on with a booster, but that protection is going to wane.”
